It was Labor Day weekend. I was minding my own business, watching YouTube, honoring the American worker by making absolutely no contribution to the economy.

Then the recommendations served me something about a Dyson product launch.

Fine. I clicked. Maybe there would be a vacuum with a new elbow. Maybe James Dyson had discovered an entirely different direction in which air could move. You know the drill: a distinguished man explains that everything you own is mechanically humiliating, then unveils a beautiful replacement that costs as much as a minor family emergency.

Instead, they started talking about a toothbrush.

I stopped half-watching. I became completely engrossed. In a toothbrush presentation. Over a holiday weekend. Somewhere, a grill cooled unattended while I developed opinions about interdental fluid dynamics.

The product is the Dyson CameraJet, priced at $499.99 in the United States. It combines electric brushing with camera-guided liquid flossing. A little camera identifies the gaps between your teeth, and the device aims a burst of mouthrinse into them.

My initial response was laughter. My second response was leaning closer to the screen. My third was mentally locating $500.

This is a launch reaction, before I have tried the thing. Unfortunately, my wallet has already watched the trailer.

Labor Day, now with unpaid molar research

For chronology enthusiasts, Dyson announced CameraJet in Paris on September 1, 2026. The company’s September 3 Unveiled event in Berlin also showcased it. I encountered the launch over Labor Day weekend, when my defenses were down and YouTube apparently decided I had enjoyed enough leisure.

Dyson says the toothbrush took six years and involved 661 engineers. Its software contains 16 million lines of code.

Six hundred and sixty-one engineers. To address the thing my dentist addresses by handing me string and looking disappointed.

That is magnificent. Humanity can organize an industrial research effort around almost anything except getting me to do a small, boring task consistently at bedtime. Dyson has correctly identified that I would rather purchase a compact engineering department than develop character.

We have covered the gadget industry’s determination to automate every domestic inconvenience. Apparently the final frontier was the space beside a premolar. Space is hard. This space has popcorn in it.

The camera has an actual job, which feels almost rude

The obvious joke is that a toothbrush has a camera now because consumer electronics companies have exhausted all the other available holes.

But the engineering ruins an easy dismissal.

Dyson says its 100,000-pixel camera analyzes 28 images per second to locate tooth gaps. The system then triggers a conical jet. That gives the camera a concrete purpose: helping the liquid go where the cleaning is supposed to happen.

This is the kind of machine learning I can get behind. Find gap. Aim rinse. Do useful thing. No inspirational essay. No unsolicited career coaching. No suggestion that my molars could improve their personal brand by posting more consistently.

It shares the appeal we found in SwitchBot giving its smart-home assistant actual chores: intelligence becomes easier to appreciate when you can point to the physical task it is helping finish.

I do not need artificial general dentistry. I need help reaching the place where a sesame seed has established permanent residency.

My mouth has entered its creator era

The MyDyson app offers a live view inside your mouth, alongside cleaning guidance and coverage information. Dyson says the images are neither recorded nor stored on the product or in the cloud.

Good. My incisors have declined all opportunities to participate in the creator economy.

After years of tech trying to put cameras on our faces, we have advanced several centimeters inward. Progress is relentless and apparently tastes like mint.

The practical attraction is visibility. Brushing normally involves a lot of moving your hand around while assuming you are doing a respectable job. Seeing more could be useful. Whether I want to watch the director’s cut of my own dental neglect every morning is another matter.

There is a limit to self-knowledge. Mine may be a close-up of whatever happened behind the last molar.

Of course the toothpaste has system requirements

Dyson also developed non-foaming toothpaste to keep the camera’s view clear. The company’s charging dock refills the brush’s mouthrinse tank at the push of a button, and the brush heads use RFID tags to track usage and prompt replacement.

We have reached the point where toothpaste can obstruct a computer’s vision. Please allow that sentence to settle before continuing with your day.

For generations, toothpaste’s technical requirements were “minty” and “comes out of tube.” Now the foam has to cooperate with the perception system. Somewhere, a bathroom is becoming a systems-integration project.

The refill dock is also dangerously appealing. I enjoy mocking tiny appliances with infrastructure until someone demonstrates a tiny appliance with infrastructure that would make my life marginally easier. Then I want the infrastructure.

Still, the purchase question extends beyond the handle. Replacement heads, compatible consumables, cleaning the equipment, and living with the routine all matter. Five hundred dollars should buy a habit I can maintain after the novelty wears off. I already have enough things in the house that briefly made me a better person in the week they arrived.

My dentist gets to keep the footnotes

Here is where the enthusiasm needs its seat belt. Dyson’s plaque-prevention claim cites a four-week study involving 71 participants, comparing its system with a manual toothbrush using Dyson toothpaste. Its separate “up to 69% more plaque” claim comes from laboratory testing in hard-to-reach areas against premium electric brushes.

Those are specific comparisons. They do not establish that spending $500 will prevent my next cavity, eliminate a future procedure, or outperform every sensible routine over years of use.

The American Dental Association recommends brushing twice daily and cleaning between teeth once daily. The important idea is already familiar: clean the places your bristles cannot properly reach, and keep doing it. Dyson’s opportunity is to make that behavior easier to sustain.

That is the experiment I actually care about. Will I use this consistently? Will it help me clean more thoroughly? Will my dentist see a difference? The launch video cannot answer those questions, however attractively it lights the nozzle.

I will still be attending regular checkups. A camera in the toothbrush does not come with a dental degree. Neither does the person staring at its app.

Yes, I am seriously buying the ridiculous toothbrush

I am going to buy one. Seriously.

Five hundred dollars for a toothbrush is absurd. If that $500 can help prevent even one painful trip to the dentist, it is totally worth it to me.

That “if” matters. I am buying a tool and a possibility, with results still to prove. But the possibility is unusually persuasive when the alternative involves reclining under a bright light while somebody says “a little pressure,” a phrase whose relationship with little has always felt legally negotiable.

I can laugh at optical targeting for teeth and still want it. I can recognize a premium appliance ecosystem making a move on my bathroom and still open the door. Occasionally, the ridiculous gadget addresses something I actually dread.

I started Labor Day weekend watching YouTube. I ended it willing to finance a small camera crew for my gums.

The recommendation algorithm won. I would like my teeth to win next.
