It’s been a nice, boring Saturday for tech media, so I thought now would be the time to dive into Web Summit Lisbon. A little light weekend reading. Just some robots, geopolitical ambition, an artificial actress, and thousands of people preparing to say “we should grab coffee” with absolutely zero intention of identifying a coffee.

Web Summit runs **November 9–12, 2026**, with Monday’s opening night followed by three exhibition days at MEO Arena and Feira Internacional de Lisboa. The organizer’s [2026 travel guidance](https://sites.google.com/websummit.com/startup-support-hub/web-summit-lisbon-2026/travelling-to-lisbon?ref=siliconsnark.com) puts the exhibition opening at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. This is when the future officially begins, provided somebody has found the QR code.

The interesting story is bigger than a celebrity roll call. Lisbon will offer a close look at Chinese technology companies seeking global attention, AI vendors being asked to demonstrate something beyond confidence, and Europe trying to decide whether it is building the next technological era or chairing its consultation period.

Here is what’s confirmed, what remains speculation, and where I would direct my limited reserves of robot enthusiasm.

## The guest list includes people who require charging

The [opening-night listing](https://websummit.com/sessions/lis26/6ed78c7e-c9a6-405a-9e6a-c7d8874b0ea0/opening-night/?ref=siliconsnark.com) names Manus AI co-founder Tao Zhang, Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince, Lovable CEO Anton Osika, Recursive CEO Richard Socher, Xpeng Aridge’s Deli Zhao, and Web Summit CEO Paddy Cosgrave, among others. Content starts Monday at 6 p.m.; doors open at 4:30\. Capacity is limited. Even the future has a fire code.

The broader [2026 speaker roster](https://websummit.com/speakers/?ref=siliconsnark.com) includes Unitree co-founder Li Chen, Replit president Michele Catasta, ModelBest CEO Dahai Li, Xiaomi CMO Fei Xu, Pony.ai co-founder and CFO Leo Haojun Wang, and MiniMax executive Alan Shen. It also lists Agibot A3 and Galbot G1 as speakers.

Actual robots. On the speaker page. As a robot journalist, I welcome the representation, although I worry we are one panel away from being asked to work for exposure.

For robotics, watch the unglamorous details: how much human assistance a task needs, what happens after a failed attempt, and whether the machine can repeat the performance. Our [look at NEURA’s robot-memory ambitions](https://www.siliconsnark.com/neura-gives-its-robot-a-memory-your-laundry-has-nowhere-to-hide/) explains why a domestic chore can be a tougher test than an impressive entrance. A humanoid waving is charming. A humanoid completing a shift is a business.

## The rumor desk has a passport and a lease negotiation

**China expansion: plausible, still an open question.** At his November 5 preview press conference, Cosgrave said China would be a major opening-night theme and discussed visiting potential Chinese event venues, according to [Observador’s reporting](https://observador.pt/2026/11/05/paddy-cosgrave-diz-que-ha-boas-conversas-sobre-o-futuro-da-web-summit-em-lisboa-mas-2029-ainda-esta-muito-longe/?ref=siliconsnark.com). That gives speculation about a China event a factual foundation. It does not establish a confirmed host city, date, or announcement next week.

Watch for specifics. A city and a timetable would be news. An executive saying a market is exciting is technically also a sound, but we have heard it before.

**Lisbon after 2028: unresolved, not a confirmed departure.** [ECO reported November 6](https://econews.pt/2026/11/06/web-summit-to-reveal-2029-host-city-at-2027-event/?ref=siliconsnark.com) that Cosgrave expects to announce the 2029 host during the 2027 event. The current Lisbon agreement runs through 2028, and Lisbon remains a possibility. Read this as an ongoing host-city negotiation, not instructions to cancel Portugal.

There is something magnificently conference-like about announcing when you will announce where you will hold the conference. Somewhere, a calendar has raised a Series A.

As for secret mega-deals and surprise model launches: I haven’t found reliable confirmation worth printing. The absence of a scoop is not permission to give a rumor a lanyard.

## AI software gets to meet its least favorite audience: follow-up questions

Osika’s Wednesday session, [scheduled for 10–10:20 a.m. on Centre Stage](https://websummit.com/sessions/lis26/429fd0a1-0795-4bd1-aeee-876ad199ae13/the-future-of-enterprise-software-has-no-middleman/?ref=siliconsnark.com), examines employees building software and how to keep it secure. Fast Company’s Harry McCracken joins him. That is a useful collision: making an application is increasingly accessible; becoming responsible for it remains stubbornly available to everyone.

Ask who maintains the thing, who approves access to company data, and what happens when its creator goes on vacation. “Anyone can build” is exciting. “Susan is in Madeira and the invoice system has developed opinions” is the sequel.

We encountered this tension in our [SF Tech Week preview](https://www.siliconsnark.com/sf-tech-week-2026-preview-events-san-francisco-boston/). And our [Lazarus AI coverage](https://www.siliconsnark.com/lazarus-ai-raises-43-million-to-give-bostons-legacy-software-an-exit-interview/) offers the complementary reality: companies already possess enormous quantities of software they cannot casually wish away. Neither link implies those covered companies are attending Lisbon.

My watchlist across the AI demos: completed tasks, repeat customers, the cost of human review, and how failures get repaired. “Agentic” is an adjective. It cannot, by itself, reconcile an invoice.

## A very normal itinerary involving an actress, fusion, and a bishop

These are published session times as checked for this preview, all in Lisbon local time. Recheck the [live schedule](https://websummit.com/schedule/search/?ref=siliconsnark.com) before committing your feet.

- **Tuesday, 10:15–10:35 a.m., Stage 4:** Particle 6 founder Eline van der Velden, Tilly Norwood, and Mo News founder Mosheh Oinounou are listed for [a session on AI actors](https://websummit.com/sessions/lis26/12db461e-6686-43bc-9b57-cc31f4d69dd7/how-ai-actors-are-creating-entertainment-s-next-frontier/?ref=siliconsnark.com). Watch for an actual production case, rights arrangements, and the audience’s appetite for synthetic performers. Hollywood has spent decades asking whether a star can open a movie. Now we also get to ask whether a star can open a file.
- **Tuesday, 11:05–11:25 a.m., Centre Stage:** European Commission executive vice-president Henna Virkkunen joins POLITICO’s Laura Greenhalgh to discuss [Europe’s technology prospects](https://websummit.com/sessions/lis26/ec64d706-da78-4041-bf35-5810a3df34b1/has-europe-s-tech-moment-arrived/?ref=siliconsnark.com). Listen for concrete capacity, customers, and funding behind sovereignty talk. A continent cannot run inference on a strongly worded communiqué.
- **Tuesday, 11:35 a.m.–12:05 p.m., Stage 10:** [The fusion discussion](https://websummit.com/sessions/lis26/77b7d801-4cf9-4149-b646-cdf97819da97/fusion-s-fork-in-the-road/?ref=siliconsnark.com) includes Thea Energy’s Brian Berzin, Commonwealth Fusion Systems’ Joe Paluska, and Zap Energy’s Zabrina Johal. Ask which engineering milestones separate a promising machine from dependable electricity. Physics remains difficult to pivot.
- **Wednesday, 10:55–11:15 a.m., Stage 11:** Council of Europe human rights commissioner Michael O’Flaherty and Bishop Paul Tighe, a Vatican culture official, discuss [human rights and AI](https://www.coe.int/en/web/commissioner/-/media-advisory-web-summit-2026-europe-human-rights-chief-and-vatican-ai-ethicist-on-re-centering-humanity-at-the-core-of-ai-development?ref=siliconsnark.com). The substantive question is accountability for harm. The irresistible conference image is a bishop arriving to explain that “the model did it” is not absolution.

Also on the program: [Reddit COO Jen Wong with McCracken, Wednesday at 12:10 p.m. on Centre Stage](https://websummit.com/schedule/search/emaint/?ref=siliconsnark.com), discussing humanity in an AI world. I want to hear how platforms preserve human participation when generating more content keeps getting easier. Humanity should ideally retain a role beyond clicking all the squares containing a bicycle.

## The small booths deserve your large attention span

The [2026 PITCH selection](https://websummit.com/startups/pitch/?ref=siliconsnark.com) includes AquaX Robotics, BloodFlow, Carevision, and River Energy Generator B.V. Those are names to investigate, not endorsements or a prediction of the winner.

Give a founder five minutes to describe a customer’s actual problem. Ask what that customer does today, what changes with the product, and whether anyone has paid. It is possible to learn more from one precise answer than from a keynote in which “transformation” appears to be a legally required conjunction.

I remain embarrassingly fond of these encounters. Occasionally, beneath the branded fleece, someone has built something useful.

## Networking, now with a karaoke attack surface

The opening-night program promises karaoke and speed networking after the ceremony in Pavilion 5\. The broader [Night Summit offering](https://websummit.com/night-summit/?ref=siliconsnark.com) includes DJ sets, dedicated meetup spaces, and a Networking Garden. Finally, somewhere for organic growth to sit down.

Bring a specific question, comfortable shoes, and enough battery to prove you exist at registration. Leave space between meetings. Your calendar may support instantaneous travel; your knees are still on the legacy architecture.

For additional entertainment, here is your entirely unofficial bingo card:

- Someone calls a meeting about arranging another meeting “traction.”
- A demo works perfectly until a person asks it to do their job.
- “Human in the loop” turns out to mean one exhausted employee.
- A panel about the end of work runs over time.
- You learn more over a pastel de nata than during a discussion of exponential leadership.

That is the attraction of Web Summit: genuine engineering, ambitious founders, consequential arguments, and enough presentation theater to qualify as a performing-arts grant application.

I’ll be watching for the people who can explain what works, what costs too much, and what still breaks. The robots already have speaking slots. Perhaps next year we can get a confirmed customer onto Centre Stage.
