- Description: SoFi’s Q3 2026 earnings reveal how its everything app makes money, why lending still matters, and what customers trade for financial convenience in one place.

The ideal customer for an everything financial app has a paycheck, a savings goal, a brokerage account and enough unfinished financial business to keep several product teams employed. The app would like to help. It would also like to be present for every monetizable stage of that help.

On October 27, [SoFi reported third-quarter GAAP net revenue of $1.385 billion and net income of $241 million](https://investors.sofi.com/news/news-details/2026/SoFi-Reports-Third-Quarter-2026-with-Record-Net-Revenue-of-1-4-Billion-Net-Income-of-241-Million-and-Raises-Full-Year-Guidance/default.aspx?ref=siliconsnark.com). Revenue rose 44% year over year. Its 17.1 million members held 26.7 million products; existing members opened 51% of new products.

Those are results for the quarter ended September 30, disclosed today. The fresh development is the earnings report, not a claim that millions of people downloaded the app this morning.

My reading: the interesting story is the economics of financial proximity. Once a company becomes the place someone checks their money, it gets more opportunities to become the place they borrow, invest or spend it. Convenience is the customer proposition. Distribution is the business proposition. Both can be true without anyone needing to wear a villain cape to the earnings call.

## The second product gets a warmer introduction

Imagine a hypothetical customer who opens a savings account, later starts investing, then needs a personal loan. Three unrelated providers would each have to attract that person, establish trust and explain where to click. A provider already on the phone’s home screen has a head start.

That does not guarantee a cheaper loan or a better investment product. It creates an opportunity to sell with less friction. The difference matters: a low-friction purchase is a description of the buying process, not a quality certificate for what was bought.

The consumer case is nevertheless persuasive. Fewer passwords, fewer interfaces and a more coherent view of cash can be useful. There is nothing especially noble about spending Saturday reconciling six apps whose designers all believe a balance should live somewhere different.

For the business, a broader relationship may make the original cost of attracting a customer easier to justify. It can also make departure more inconvenient. Moving one account is a chore. Moving a small personal financial civilization is a project. That is an incentive worth recognizing even when the service works well.

## The bank is doing actual bank things

SoFi’s deposits reached $51.3 billion. Lending GAAP revenue rose 66% to $821.3 million. Meanwhile, technology platform revenue fell 24% to $87.4 million, including an exited major client’s impact; excluding that impact, SoFi reports 18% growth.

The distinction is central. Selling financial infrastructure to other businesses and lending money to consumers are different activities with different vulnerabilities. A software customer can leave. A borrower can fail to repay. Giving both operations an attractive parent-company logo does not make their risks interchangeable.

The [Federal Reserve’s analysis of deposits and financial intermediation](https://www.federalreserve.gov/econres/notes/feds-notes/banks-in-the-age-of-stablecoins-implications-for-deposits-credit-and-financial-intermediation-20251217.html) explains why retail deposits matter: relatively inexpensive, stable funding helps banks finance longer-duration assets, while deposit outflows can raise funding pressure and constrain credit. That basic relationship survives every redesign of the banking app.

This helps explain the strategic attraction behind [TabaPay’s proposed bank acquisition](https://www.siliconsnark.com/tabapay-raised-155-million-to-put-a-bank-inside-its-payment-api/). Owning more of the regulated machinery can change a fintech’s economics and control. It also hands the operator more machinery to maintain.

For SoFi, the analytical mistake would be to admire the interface so intensely that the loan book disappears. A lender needs underwriting that works when borrowers are under pressure, not merely an elegant application funnel when they are optimistic. The app can remove paperwork. It cannot remove the future.

## One login, several legal relationships

SoFi’s [terms of use](https://www.sofi.com/terms-of-use/?ref=siliconsnark.com) identify multiple affiliated providers behind its services, including SoFi Bank, SoFi Securities, SoFi Wealth and SoFi Digital Assets. The interface may feel unified; the legal relationships remain product-specific.

That is neither unusual nor automatically sinister. It is what happens when software arranges several financial businesses into a coherent experience. But the customer still needs to know what they own, who owes them money and which protections apply.

The [FDIC’s guidance](https://www.fdic.gov/resources/deposit-insurance?ref=siliconsnark.com) is clear that deposit insurance does not cover stocks, bonds or crypto assets. Buying or holding a non-deposit product through a bank-associated experience does not turn it into an insured deposit. A familiar logo is not a universal safety blanket.

SiliconSnark’s coverage of [SoFi’s stablecoin ambitions](https://www.siliconsnark.com/sofi-started-minting-a-stablecoin-because-the-super-app-wasnt-complicated-enough/) and its [Kraken infrastructure relationship](https://www.siliconsnark.com/sofi-put-kraken-behind-its-bank-the-stablecoin-loop-is-closed/) explored the expanding machinery behind the app. Those earlier developments are context, not today’s launch news.

The practical test for any expanding financial bundle is whether adding products preserves clarity. A customer should not need to become an amateur corporate-structure enthusiast to understand the difference between savings, investments and speculative assets. More capability is useful. More ambiguity is a fee paid in attention.

## The forecast has not earned its money yet

SoFi raised its 2026 adjusted net revenue outlook to $5.04 billion and introduced a $6.4 billion outlook for 2027\. These are forecasts. Its $470 million quarterly adjusted EBITDA is also a different measure from the $241 million GAAP net income.

Keeping those labels attached is basic reporting hygiene. A forward estimate describes management’s expectations. An adjusted profitability measure describes performance under specified exclusions. Neither should casually take the place of completed, generally accepted accounting results just because its number looks better in large type.

Readers should ask how the individual businesses perform, how expensive growth becomes and whether customers keep using the products they open. Product counts help describe reach; they cannot, by themselves, answer every question about relationship quality.

A related industry question appears in [Modern Treasury’s application for a national trust bank charter](https://www.siliconsnark.com/modern-treasury-seeks-a-bank-charter-for-the-money-between-api-calls/). That proposal concerns custody rather than consumer lending, but it reinforces the need to identify the regulated operation beneath the screen.

SoFi has supplied a profitable quarter worthy of scrutiny rather than reflexive eye-rolling. The fair verdict is that financial convenience can be a useful product and a powerful sales channel at the same time. Customers benefit when the bundle earns their loyalty product by product. The company benefits when they stop looking elsewhere.

The everything app’s most valuable feature may be that, eventually, checking the competition starts to feel like leaving the house.
